We capture Benja in a place familiar and dear, the municipal theater International Theater Amsterdam. The space has seen many great performances by not only Bruijning himself, but his great-grandfather, Jo Sternheim. You can find a portrait of the famous actor by painter Harry Koolen hanging in one of the hallways. Everything worn by Benja personally curated to reflect his character and tailored to his form. “I think character always shows in relation to conventions and how you interpret them as an individual. How one chooses to follow certain conventions and go against others. That’s how you manifest your character in life, to me.”
“One of the most fascinating things parenthood taught me, is that as a child you cannot do anything but follow your own character. What comes natural to them is the most difficult thing for an actor: remove all context.”
